What a great first week of school! I enjoyed seeing all the returning students and meeting the many new students. This will be a great year at Greenland Elementary! This week a packet of papers was sent home with your student(s). Please make sure you read the welcome letter from Mr. Barton, fill out the necessary papers, and return the papers to school. If you have ever considered volunteering at school either with the Book Fair, counting Box Tops, or just helping out your child's teacher in the classroom, then look for the volunteer form in the packet! Arkansas Reading ChallengeThe Arkansas State Library nominates several outstanding books to compete in a student's choice book award - the Arkansas Diamond Primary Book Award (K-3) and the Charlie May Simon Book Award (4-6). Students must read at least 3 titles from each list by the end of March 2016 to be eligible to vote for the book they believe should win the award. This is a great opportunity for your student to try reading something new and to share their opinion. The reading lists are below, and students may check out titles at school or at the public library. The winners are chosen strictly by popular vote from the students across Arkansas! Reading Hall of Fame ChallengeThis year, students are being challenged to read as many words as they can to enter the Reading Hall of Fame! In order to enter the Reading Hall of Fame, students must read a certain number of words by the end of the school year. Each student who qualifies for the Reading Hall of Fame will receive a certificate at the end of the school year during the awards assembly and a reward for the level they achieved in the Reading Hall of Fame. The levels of the Reading Hall of Fame are below: 1. Award Winning Reader - read 250,000 words 2. Rockstar Reader - read 550,000 words 3. All-Star Reader - read 850,000 and beyond Word totals will be calculated through the Accelerated Reader (AR) program. Please encourage your child to take an AR test either in the library or in their classroom for their words to count. Your child can even test on books that YOU read to them!

Summer is almost here! Help your child continue to be successful by encouraging them to read over the summer. Many students suffer from the "summer slide" and lose some of the academic progress made during the school year. Having your child read 20 minutes every day will help prevent the "summer slide" and increase your child's reading comprehension and vocabulary. Summer Reading at the Fayetteville LibraryThe Fayetteville Public Library offers a summer reading program for kids, teens, and adults. Registration is free and may be done online or by visiting the library. Kids, teens, and adults can earn incentive prizes for every 5 hours read and a grand prize drawing will occur at the end of the program for all the people who participated. You do not want to miss out on this great opportunity! Click the button below for more information. Arkansas Book Award WinnersThis year students were encouraged to read books that were nominated for an Arkansas Book Award. Students in grades K-3 read books nominated for the Arkansas Diamond Primary Book Award. Students in grade 4 read books nominated for the Charlie May Simon Book Award. Participating students were instructed to read at least 3 of the nominated books in order to submit a vote for their favorite book. Student votes across the state were counted in order to determine the winners. And the winners are...
Book MadnessThe final round of Book Madness is over! And the winners are... The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and the beloved Dr. Seuss book Green Eggs and Ham are the student favorites for the 2014-2015 school year! I look forward to continuing this tradition next year!
IOWA testing is now complete! PARCC end of year testing will be upon us shortly. Please remember to bring your child to school on time and well rested to help support a successful test session. May the scores be with you! This week in the library...Students were introduced to the genre of Historical Fiction. Over the next few weeks, students will be exposed to picture books and novels that allow them to learn about different times in history. Currently, 1st and 2nd grade students are learning about slavery and the Underground Railroad while reading the book Henry's Freedom Box by Ellen Levine. 3rd graders will begin learning about the Civil War while reading I Survived: The Battle of Gettysburg, 1863 by Lauren Tarshis. 4th grade students are learning about the Titanic as we read White Star: A Dog on the Titanic by Marty Crisp. As they listen to historical fiction, students will also be working on an exciting opportunity...more details coming soon! Book Madness!Corresponding with basketball's March Madness, students have been voting to choose the #1 chapter book and the #1 picture book! We began with 8 chapter books and 8 picture books - the most circulated in our library. Each week students have voted and narrowed down to our final pair (see below). Which book should be the #1 chapter book? Which book should be the #1 picture book?
Happy Friday! Today is the last day for PARCC Progress Based Assessments for the 3rd and 4th graders. Specials schedules this week were altered so teachers could assist with testing. After Spring Break it should be back to business as usual, but in the mean time, be checking the student work gallery to view the students projects that are completed! More work will be added as students finish in the coming weeks. Tomorrow...SPRING BREAK begins! Have a wonderful break. Relax. Read a book...or 2...or 10. Enjoy your week, and I look forward to seeing everyone back on March 30th! **Attention Parents** I will be the Parent Involvement Coordinator for the 2015-2016 school year! I am very excited to work with you and plan ways for parents to be involved in education. I will be looking for some parent volunteers to serve on committees next year. There will be a short and sweet meeting on April 13th at 5:00pm to explain the committees and sign up volunteers. Serving on the committees is a way for you share your opinion, so mark April 13th on your calendar and plan on making your voice heard! (The meeting will be over in time for you to attend the monthly PTO meeting.)
