{ ALL LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE BY MAY 6TH }Summer ReadingThe end of the school year is quickly approaching! Soon students and teachers alike will be singing "School's out for summer!" However, learning does not need to stop over the summer. In fact, students who do not practice in some way the skills they have learned can suffer from the "summer slide" or a learning loss. [see the charts below] One easy way to help make the summer count is to have your child READ! Reading 15+ minutes each day can help prevent a summer learning loss, and there are plenty of opportunities this summer to make reading fun! The Fayetteville Public Library offers a summer reading program with prizes that will help keep your child motivated to read! The Super Saturday Summer Reading Kick-Off is June 4th from 10:00AM-12:00PM. Find out more information about the FREE summer reading challenge by visiting the Fayetteville Public Library. Both the Greenland Public Library and the West Fork Public Library offer summer programming with events for your child to attend and participate in. The events should be announced soon at the public library locations. You may call or visit the Greenland and West Fork Public Libraries to find out more information. Getting your child to read is half the battle...now WHAT should they read? I have compiled a suggested summer reading list for K-6 students. All books are available at the public libraries, but the smaller libraries may need time to loan them from larger libraries like Fayetteville. The books were selected based on the Arkansas book award nominees for 2016-2017, national book award nominees/winners, and positive reviews from organizations such as the Horn Book and the School Library Journal. The books on the list span a variety of topics, so your child will find several to suit their liking. Even if your child does not choose to read books from the list, please encourage them to read this summer. 15 minutes a day makes a difference in their education and their future. A personal note...It saddens me to say that I will not be returning to Greenland Elementary next year. My husband's job will be moving us to Kansas. I have greatly enjoyed my time as a Pirate! I will always treasure the relationships I have made with students, parents, and the staff of the Greenland School District. Thank you to everyone who makes Greenland such a wonderful place!
