What a great first week of school! I enjoyed seeing all the returning students and meeting the many new students. This will be a great year at Greenland Elementary! This week a packet of papers was sent home with your student(s). Please make sure you read the welcome letter from Mr. Barton, fill out the necessary papers, and return the papers to school. If you have ever considered volunteering at school either with the Book Fair, counting Box Tops, or just helping out your child's teacher in the classroom, then look for the volunteer form in the packet! Arkansas Reading ChallengeThe Arkansas State Library nominates several outstanding books to compete in a student's choice book award - the Arkansas Diamond Primary Book Award (K-3) and the Charlie May Simon Book Award (4-6). Students must read at least 3 titles from each list by the end of March 2016 to be eligible to vote for the book they believe should win the award. This is a great opportunity for your student to try reading something new and to share their opinion. The reading lists are below, and students may check out titles at school or at the public library. The winners are chosen strictly by popular vote from the students across Arkansas! Reading Hall of Fame ChallengeThis year, students are being challenged to read as many words as they can to enter the Reading Hall of Fame! In order to enter the Reading Hall of Fame, students must read a certain number of words by the end of the school year. Each student who qualifies for the Reading Hall of Fame will receive a certificate at the end of the school year during the awards assembly and a reward for the level they achieved in the Reading Hall of Fame. The levels of the Reading Hall of Fame are below: 1. Award Winning Reader - read 250,000 words 2. Rockstar Reader - read 550,000 words 3. All-Star Reader - read 850,000 and beyond Word totals will be calculated through the Accelerated Reader (AR) program. Please encourage your child to take an AR test either in the library or in their classroom for their words to count. Your child can even test on books that YOU read to them!
