Below, you will find the top 10 titles checked out during the month of August! Definitely some excellent reads here! Today we launched into a brand new school year! As the new captain of the boat here in the GES Library, I am very excited to begin this journey with all our little Pirates! As part of my preparation for the new school year, I developed a mission statement for the library - The mission of the Greenland Elementary School Library is provide tools to all our Pirates to set sail on a lifelong journey of academic success. These tools include:
We already have a ton of things coming up. I will be updating this blog and the Facebook page regularly with happening around school and in the library. One of the biggest things coming down the pipeline is the 2016 Bookaneer Book Fair - Where books are the treasure! If you or someone you know are interested in volunteering to help with the fair, please email me at [email protected]. I look forward to working closely with parents and teachers to develop fabulous programs at GES!

ALL LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE ASAPThe end of the year is a busy time in the library! Students are wrapping up their final projects, students are turning in library books for the last time, and I begin the final end of the year inventory. On Monday, students who have overdue books will receive a notice with the book's title and price. Please locate the overdue books and turn them in as soon as possible. If you are unable to locate the overdue book, then payment will be necessary to replace that book in the school's collection. School libraries operate on limited funding yet are asked to provide resources and information for all students and faculty. Each book is valued and used to enhance your child's education through reading for pleasure or reading for information. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation! Parent Involvement OpportunitiesParents, there are many ways you can be involved at our school! On May 10th at 5:30PM in the cafeteria, there will be an Elementary Parent Involvement Committee meeting. The purpose of the Parent Involvement Committee is to work with teachers and administrators to help make decisions. The committee evaluates school policies, aids in event planning (i.e. Literacy Night), and voices opinions on the spending of Title I funds. This committee is an effective way to voice your opinion and help keep Greenland Elementary improving! Parent Involvement Committee Meeting May 10, 2016 ----- 5:30PM, GES Cafeteria Agenda: Evaluate the Student/Parent/Teacher Compact from the handbook, nominate members to serve on the Title I and ACSIP committees. { ALL LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE BY MAY 6TH }Summer ReadingThe end of the school year is quickly approaching! Soon students and teachers alike will be singing "School's out for summer!" However, learning does not need to stop over the summer. In fact, students who do not practice in some way the skills they have learned can suffer from the "summer slide" or a learning loss. [see the charts below] One easy way to help make the summer count is to have your child READ! Reading 15+ minutes each day can help prevent a summer learning loss, and there are plenty of opportunities this summer to make reading fun! The Fayetteville Public Library offers a summer reading program with prizes that will help keep your child motivated to read! The Super Saturday Summer Reading Kick-Off is June 4th from 10:00AM-12:00PM. Find out more information about the FREE summer reading challenge by visiting the Fayetteville Public Library. Both the Greenland Public Library and the West Fork Public Library offer summer programming with events for your child to attend and participate in. The events should be announced soon at the public library locations. You may call or visit the Greenland and West Fork Public Libraries to find out more information. Getting your child to read is half the battle...now WHAT should they read? I have compiled a suggested summer reading list for K-6 students. All books are available at the public libraries, but the smaller libraries may need time to loan them from larger libraries like Fayetteville. The books were selected based on the Arkansas book award nominees for 2016-2017, national book award nominees/winners, and positive reviews from organizations such as the Horn Book and the School Library Journal. The books on the list span a variety of topics, so your child will find several to suit their liking. Even if your child does not choose to read books from the list, please encourage them to read this summer. 15 minutes a day makes a difference in their education and their future. A personal note...It saddens me to say that I will not be returning to Greenland Elementary next year. My husband's job will be moving us to Kansas. I have greatly enjoyed my time as a Pirate! I will always treasure the relationships I have made with students, parents, and the staff of the Greenland School District. Thank you to everyone who makes Greenland such a wonderful place!
