Our Study on Australia is coming to an end. Students studied more about the land, famous places, and culture of Australia this week. Next week, the students will begin their final project. Students will be designing a postage stamp to represent what they have learned about Australia. As students finish, the projects will be displayed in the library. Feel free to stop by and take a look over the next few weeks! Kindergarten students have been learning about the library - how to behave, how to get books form the shelves, and how to take care of their book. This week we read a great story written by David Shannon - A Bad Case of Stripes. Students then got to create themselves with a case of stripes. Their projects will also be on display over the next few weeks! Helpful WebsitesLearning Game and online reading websites have been added! If you click on Helpful Websites at the top of this page, you will be directed to a list of websites to help your child practice math facts, reading skills, or just find books to read online. All of the websites are free, but some may require an adult to register for a free account just to ensure the child has permission to access that content. I highly recommend checking out the site We Give Books. They have many quality books to read on any device that can access the internet. Plus, when a student finishes a book online, a book is donated to a kid in need thanks to the First Book program! Read. Share. Give. When the project is completed, students will be able to take the project home to share fun information about Australia with you! Reading "Hall of Fame" ChallengeStudents in kindergarten through fourth grade are encouraged to participate in a reading challenge this year! Students have been challenged to read at least 250,000 words. Students who reach that goal are invited to a pizza party at the end of the school year and will win a raffle ticket to try and win a grand prize -- a Kindle Fire HD tablet! Encourage your child to read each night and remind them to take an Accelerated Reader (or AR as the students call it) quiz over each book they finish reading. The AR program will track the number of words each student reads. Currently, 4 students have earned the pizza party and raffle tickets! You may look for their pictures on the bulletin board outside the library. Many students are close...keep encouraging good, nightly reading habits in your children. Happy reading! Literacy is a major focus this year at Greenland Elementary. Mr. Barton challenged families to make sure their student(s) read at least 15 minutes every night, whether reading aloud together or encouraging your student(s) to read independently. Reading makes a profound difference in your student's education through improving literacy skills, increasing vocabulary, increasing standardized testing scores, etc. Review the infographics below for additional reasons why your student should read every day!
