Literacy NightTHANK YOU to everyone who attended our Reading Safari Literacy Night event! Teachers and members of the Parent Involvement Committee worked hard to prepare for the event. Parents, I hope you walked away with simple, practical examples and tips on how to help your students engage with reading and the Common Core Literacy skills. If you have any follow up questions, please email me ([email protected]) and I will do my best to answer your question or forward your question to the person who can answer it best. SPRING BREAK!Books are now speaking to the students! Students are loving the speech bubbles and are trying new and different books. Make sure your child has selected good books to read over Spring Break! Students may ask their teacher to switch their books during any open library hours. The Fayetteville Public Library is hosting an afternoon movie each day during Spring Break at 2:00PM. The movie schedule is listed below. There is no need to register. You can just show up and watch a good family movie!
The Fayetteville Public Library also offers many apps for accessing books electronically. If you are heading out on a family vacation next week, then stop by the library to get a free card! You will be able to download eBooks and audiobooks to keep your child reading and entertained while you travel.

Read Around the World: AfricaStudents at GES have learned about Australia, and now we have started learning about another continent - Africa! Kindergarten and first grade students have been learning about some familiar African animals and how to tell the difference from a fiction and nonfiction book. Second grade students will be taking a closer look at some African countries like Malawi and Uganda through reading the picture books Beatrice's Goat and Galimoto. Third grade students have researched their favorite African animals and will be creating a video project using an app on the new library iPads. Fourth grade students will begin researching African countries and how to find reliable information online. Fourth graders will also be preparing a video project using an app on the iPads in the future. Students are learning new and interesting things in the library! Be on the lookout for sample projects posted soon! Reading Hall of FameThis year I challenged each student to read at least 250,000 words to earn a pizza party and raffle tickets for the grand prize of a Kindle Fire tablet! My heart is happy seeing students embracing the challenge and loving to read! 15 students have already earned the pizza party, and many more are very close! As a school our students have... 1. Read more than 3,500 books! 2. Read more than 14,000,000 words! Visit the Reading Hall of Fame bulletin board in the hallway near the library to see if you know any of the rockstar readers at GES! LITERACY NIGHTOur annual Literacy Night will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 from 5:30-7:00PM. At Literacy Night, you will be able to participate in several activities with your child, learn different ways to read and learn on tablets or smartphones, and get more information on state testing and tips on how to help your child be more successful. This event will be fun, interactive, and informative. You will not want to miss it!
The Book Fair is coming!February 8-12, 2016, Greenland Elementary will host a Feelin' Groovy book fair from Scholastic! Scholastic offers high interest books that kids love to read at a variety of prices. Students will bring home a flier on Monday with several books that will be available for purchase. Please remember that sales tax will be charged in addition to the advertised prices. Cash, checks, and credit/debit cards will be accepted. The book fair is also available online! The online fair has a much larger selection to choose from - plus, you get to skip the crowds and payment lines! All of the online orders will still benefit our school's library AND all orders are shipped for free straight to the school. The online fair is a great convenience, and I encourage you to click the picture above to begin your shopping!
I hope everyone has had a restful holiday vacation! I greatly enjoyed the holiday break and enjoyed having time to read, play board games, and bake/cook. Many exciting things are in the works for library lessons in 2016! The library is in the process of adding a class set of iPads for students to use to create projects, research information, and discover books to checkout and read. I am very excited about this opportunity! Technology can be a very effective tool to motivate and engage students to do their best work. Be on the lookout for digital projects over the next few weeks! Please encourage your child to read something outside their "comfort zone" this year. Captain Underpants, Goosebumps, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid are excellent reads...but so are Serafina's Promise, Whistle in the Dark, and No Pirates Allowed. Books are an excellent resource to teach readers about the world and to begin forming their own opinions on issues. Encourage children to read. Ask them about what they are reading. Allow children to ask you questions about the life lessons and issues they may be learning from the book they are reading. Each week, a section of this blog will be dedicated to a book that deals with topics relevant to our world today. Look for the first book to be posted later this week!
Thanksgiving is quickly approaching! This week in the midst of final projects and last week before a week off busyness, students and teachers will be given an opportunity to share books they are thankful for. We all have a book or books that are near and dear to our hearts for the memories and lessons they provide. The books I am most thankful for are listed below. Please share books you are thankful for in the comments below! 1. The Little Critter book series by Mercer Mayer My parents always took time to read with me when I was younger, and the Little Critter books were a bedtime favorite. 2. Fish is Fish by Leo Lionni This book teaches the importance of being happy with yourself. I am thankful for books that share such powerful messages with young readers. 3. Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine I LOVE this book! Ella is dealt a difficult hand in life, yet she works hard and overcomes her situation. Ella is a strong, inspiring character for girls to look up to. 4. Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling I am thankful for books that keep me turning the pages until the very end! 5. Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watt I am thankful for funny, silly stories that encourage kids to love reading, and Scaredy Squirrel is my favorite silly book! $1 Book Fair is coming! On December 7, Greenland Elementary will host a book fair from Once Upon a Time Books. The books will all be $1, tax free, and in gently used condition. This book fair will not serve as a fundraiser for the library. This book fair will simply make quality children's literature available and affordable for all. I am searching for volunteers to help run the book fair during school hours the week of December 7-11. If you are able to volunteer during school hours, please contact me through email, the library's Facebook page, or by calling the school.
